Is Pedaling Mandatory on E-Bikes?

For riders wondering if they must pedal their e-bike, the answer is a resounding "No"—at least in 99% of the United States. While places like the European Union mandate pedal assist only, U.S. laws offer more flexibility, allowing e-bike riders the choice of throttle or pedal assist. This means whether you’re too tired after a long ride, carrying extra cargo, or simply want to ease into your biking routine, you can rely on the throttle to get you home. At the Electric Bike Company, we are strong advocates of this flexibility. All of our bikes come with Class 2 capabilities—20 mph with throttle or pedal assist—and you can upgrade to Class 3 to increase pedal assist speed to 28 mph. The freedom to ride your way is what sets our e-bikes apart.
