Inspired by my recent multi-track vocal exercise, "Ich armes welsches Teufli", and for Christmas, I spent an evening recording a vocal rendition of my favourite Christmas piece, "Es ist ein Ros entsprungen".
This is another piece we sang back in university German choir days.
Though an atheist, I still consider myself a cultural Christian and have a deep love and respect for many pieces of sacred music, and this piece is right up there as a personal favourite.
Recorded in Cubase Artist 11 in 16 tracks, with 4 tracks of each vocal part – soprano, alto, tenor, and bass, but all sung within my vocal range, of course, so effectively a 16 member male choir.
Could be tidier in places, especially with endings of lines, but it’ll do for an evening’s fun.
This choral arrangement is credited to Michael Prätorius in 1609, but its original author predates that and the piece first appeared in print in 1599.

Es ist ein Ros entsprungen,
aus einer Wurzel zart,
wie uns die Alten sungen,
von Jesse kam die Art
Und hat ein Blümlein bracht
mitten im kalten Winter,
wohl zu der halben Nacht.
Das Röslein, das ich meine,
davon Jesaja sagt,
hat uns gebracht alleine
Marie, die reine Magd;
aus Gottes ew’gem Rat
hat sie ein Kind geboren
und blieb doch reine Magd.
Das Blümelein, so kleine,
das duftet uns so süß,
mit seinem hellen Scheine
vertreibt’s die Finsternis.
Wahr Mensch und wahrer Gott,
hilft uns aus allem Leide,
rettet von Sünd und Tod.
