23 Bicycle Safety Tips for Fall and Winter

As the days get shorter and more rain, snow, and debris are present on bike paths and roads, these bicycle safety tips will help you to stay visible and in control. I’ve been cycling for decades, and accumulated this knowledge through friends and professional bike shops! This is a shortlist of what’s included in the video:

1. wear bright reflective clothing
2. choose a bike that has a bright color, or use reflective stickers
3. look for reflective tires
4. lights are great for the bike, your helmet, and backpack. Integrated lights are best!
5. having the lights high up and point where you steer and not blocked
6. fenders and chain covers to keep you dry and snag free
7. go slow and turn carefully with wet tires and debris such as gravel and leaves
8. electric bikes weigh more, so ideally the weight is low and center for stability
9. suspension keeps your tires on the road for better traction and steering
10. anti-lock brake systems to keep the front wheel from locking and sliding
11. puncture resistant tires are less likely to blowout and will last longer
12. get the appropriate tire tread for your terrain
13. keep the reflectors that come with your bike, consider light-up pedals like arclight
14. get the appropriate sized frame for your body, and have it fit by a local shop
15. maintain your bike, take it to the shop at least once per year if you ride regularly
16. make sure your tire pressure is within the recommended range (stamped on the tire sidewall)
17. point the quick release levers on your wheel axles up or up and back so they don’t snag
18. tune up your brakes if pads are wearing down or lever is pulling into the bar
19 bells are a friendly way to signal, and can be useful if your throat gets dry
20. gloves protect your hands, keep them warm, and can be reflective, some have touch-screen useable finger tips
21. appropriate saddle can make a big difference in comfort, and help you ride longer. You can start with the saddle low for approachability, but then raise it for efficiency.
22. consider padded bike shorts or pants for comfort
23. dropper post can make the saddle approachable and then high for efficiency
